I really enjoyed reading about all your houses and life stages - we have moved 8 times as a couple, from London to Surrey, Sussex and now Hereford by the beautiful River Wye. My children are adults with children of their own in Brighton and London. But my must memorable move was aged 5 from Paris to London post war and a gloomy rental that my mum turned into a trendy 60’s Scandi style house with colour full curtains I still remember and Ercol furniture … I lived there till I went to University in York.
Lovely memories! I can still picture the ‘groovy’ white spinning chair my parents had in our first home. I have a photo of my mum sitting in it, looking cool and very young!
We may have to move eventually for access but have put it on hold for now. It's a unique place to live though our 3 generational household sometimes feels quite a squeeze. It's an old Victorian terrace in a gated street with a park the size of a football pitch between us and the terrace opposite, with trees bordering. We are in the middle of the city and live the combination of this secret park in the middle. 30 years is the longest I've lived in the same house. My nice recently commented how she loved our house as it was the only 'same' house in our wider family. Really enjoyed reading about your homes.
Gosh, that sounds a beautiful place to live, Jean. I had a really strong memory this week of a schoolfriend’s childhood home. It’s amazing how some places we spend time stay with us - your niece obviously feels that about your home.
Thank you, Fiona. I’ve loved your writing since your Red column days - and now your artwork, too. I remember you bringing the twins into the Red office. A long time ago now!
Such a lovely read x
Thank you, Ali 😌
